As the world gets more progressive day by day, consumerism also increases.
Consumerism is the idea that people buy excessive goods which - although is good for the
market - has devastating effects on the planet as it promotes waste.
Epicurus’ philosophy is something quite opposite to consumerism. Epicurus believes
excessive materialism doesn't bring true happiness in people’s lives. Happiness can be found in
simple things like friendship and freedom. He believes someone who has a huge amount of
money but doesn't have a true friend or has no freedom cannot truly be happy and as a result all
his wealth and fame is of no use. On the other hand, someone who has limited money can live a
happy content life because he has good company and freedom.(de Botton pg 58-59)
Epicurus’ philosophy is exactly what is needed in today’s society because consumerism
causes climate change, child labour and other serious issues. If people realise what brings true
happiness then they will invest less on materialistic things and the world would be a better and
happier place. Epicurus emphasized “ the possession of the greatest riches does not resolve the
agitation of the soul nor give birth to remarkable joy”(de Botton, pg-64) which is true because
even millionaires suffer from depression.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world completely. Apart from the fear of getting
infected by the virus, most of the people are worried about losing their jobs and not being able to
support themselves and their family.
