Stephen Kelman: ‘Pigeon English’

THEMES
THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE (Harri’s innocence is central to the novel’s impact. Despite the
grim setting and themes, Harri retains a sense of wonder and naivety. His childlike curiosity
lead him to treat the murder like an adventure, and he fails to see the full extent of the
danger he is in). Harri is only 11 years old and much of the novel’s power comes from seeing
a violent world through his innocent eyes. His childlike understanding of death, crime, and
loyalty contrasts poignantly with the harsh reality that encompasses him.
URBAN VIOLENCE AND GANG CULTURE (through Harri’s experiences the author
highlights the tragic influence of gang culture on young people in disadvantaged areas,
showing how children are often forced to choose between survival and morality)As Harri
attempts to solve the murder mystery, he is increasingly drawn into gang culture, not fully
realising the danger he faces. He finds himself torn between his fear and his fascination, as
he looks up to the gang members but also wants to remain innocent (cross-reference this
point with the theme of INNOCENCE v. GUILT)
IMMIGRATION AND CULTURAL IDENTITY (when the novel begins the main characters
have just moved to London from Ghana). The novel depicts the unfair treatment of
immigrants in the UK.
SOCIETAL PRESSURES
FRIENDSHIP
INNOCENCE v. GUILT the novel begins with the death of an unnamed character known only
as “the dead boy”. Harri becomes obsessed with finding the boy’s killer, and he teams up
with Dean on a “personal mission” to solve the case which leads Harri to reflect on the
nature of innocence v. guilt.
MASCULINITY Pigeon English deals directly with the challenges that young males face
growing up in a poor and violent area of London. The need for power and status is clear in
the male communities. Kelman shows that boys lacking healthy role models learn that
violence proves their masculinity.
POVERTY the setting - a rundown council estate - reflects the socioeconomic struggles
faced by Harri’s family and others in his community. Poverty impacts their living conditions,
safety and access to opportunities.
LANGUAGE
DEATH (sub theme: morbid fascination). The novel begins and ends with death, giving it a
cyclical structure.
ADAPTATION AND BELONGING (a sub-theme of immigration and cultural identity)

How does Kelman present Harrison as a character who is innocent about the realities
of inner-city life?
Write about:
• what Harrison says and does
• how Kelman presents Harrison as a character who is innocent about the realities of
inner-city life.
