CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY CHAPTER
6 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Self-Construal - ANSWER-What is the term for the view of one's self?

Twenty Statements Test - ANSWER-What is the term for a test in which participants are asked to
write 20 statements starting with "I am _____" ?

It is a well-used measure of self-concept.

Some cultures encourage people to focus on their enduring inner attributes, such as personality
traits, attitudes, or abilities, as a way to understand themselves.

- Ex. I am creative.

Other cultures encourage people to focus on their connection with others by considering
themselves in terms of concrete roles, relationships, and group memberships.

- Ex. I am a daughter. - ANSWER-Give an example of how people from various cultures differ in
their answers on the twenty statements test.

Independent View of Self

· Independent individuals experience their identities as largely distinct from their relationships.

· Also, independent people have close relationships and more distant relationships, but the
more distant relationships are able to become closer (fluidity between in-groups and out-
groups). - ANSWER-There are at least 2 ways in which people view themselves.

What is the term for a model of self in which identity is thought to come from inner attributes
that reflect a unique essence of the individual and that remain stable across situations and
across the lifespan?

Interdependent View of Self

, · The identity of an interdependent person is experienced as fluid in different situations.
Depending on the situation, and the role that person occupies in the situation, the person's
experience of their self will vary accordingly.

· Also, people outside of one's inner circle do not easily move into the inner circle, and those in
the inner circle do not easily move out of it. People with an interdependent self tend to view
ingroup and outgroup members as distinct and may behave differently towards them. -
ANSWER-There are at least 2 ways in which people view themselves.

What is the term for a model of self in which individuals are perceived as participants in a larger
social unit where identity is contingent upon key relationships with in-group members?

People with an independent self-construal are just as likely to have a relationship with someone
in their social circle than a stranger.

In an interdependent self-construal, this doesn't happen. People form intimate relationships
with people who they know. This is connected to the idea of arranged marriages in collectivistic
cultures. - ANSWER-How does the formation of intimate relationships differ between
independent and interdependent individuals?

Western individuals (independent view) showed *different* brain areas being active when they
thought about themselves or about someone else such as their mother.

Chinese individuals (interdependent view) showed activation in the *same* brain area when
thinking about themselves or their mother. - ANSWER-Explain the finding about different brain
activation in independent vs interdependent views of self.

* - ANSWER-* Interesting Finding:

Studies found that Asian-Americans were more accurate at identifying the emotions
experienced by friends while European-Americans were more accurate in identifying the
emotions experienced by strangers.
