An introduction to Algebra

Introduction to Algebra
What is Algebra?

In simple terms, algebra is about finding the unknown. Instead of just working with known numbers like 2, 5,
or 10, we use letters like x, y, or a to stand for numbers we don't yet know. These letters are called variables.

Algebra helps us solve problems by creating equations, which are mathematical sentences that show how
different quantities are related. For example, the equation x + 3 = 7 tells us that some number (x) plus 3
equals 7. Our goal is to find out what that number is!

Why is Algebra Important?

Algebra is not just an abstract concept; it's used in many areas of life, including:

Science: Calculating distances, forces, and chemical reactions.
Engineering: Designing bridges, buildings, and airplanes.
Economics: Modeling financial markets and predicting economic trends.
Computer Science: Writing code and developing algorithms.
Everyday Life: Budgeting, cooking, and planning.

Chapter 1: Algebraic Expressions

Algebraic expressions are combinations of numbers, variables, and mathematical operations (+, -, ×,
÷). They do not contain an equals sign (=).

Examples:

3x + 5
2y - 7
a² + 4b - 9

Terms: Parts of an algebraic expression separated by + or - signs.

Coefficients: a number that is in front of a variable (e.g., in 3x, 3 is the coefficient).

, Constants: Terms that do not contain variables or a number without a variable (e.g., 5 in 3x + 5).

Variables: Letters and Symbols that represent unknown values (e.g., x in 3x + 5).

Like Terms: Terms that have the same variable raised to the same power (e.g., 2x and 5x are like
terms).

Simplifying Algebraic Expressions:

Combine like terms by adding or subtracting their coefficients.

Example:

Simplify 2x + 5x - 3y + y

1. Identify like terms: (2x and 5x) and (-3y and y)
2. Combine like terms: (2 + 5)x + (-3 + 1)y = 7x - 2y

Chapter 1 Activities

1. Identify the variables in the following expressions: a) 5x + 3 b) 2y - 7 c) a² + b
2. What is the coefficient of x in each expression? a) 8x b) -3x c) 0.5x
3. Simplify: 3x + 2x - x
4. Simplify: 4y - y + 5y
5. Simplify: 2a + 3b - a + 2b
6. Simplify: 5x² - 2x² + x
7. Simplify: 7ab + 3ab - 2ab
8. What are the constants in: a) 4x + 9 b) 2y - 5 c) a² + b + 3
9. Are 2x and 2x² like terms? Explain.
10. Are 3y and -y like terms? Explain.
11. Simplify 6p + 2q - p + 5q
12. Simplify 8m - 3n - 2m - n
13. Simplify 4x² + 2x - x² + 3x
14. Simplify 9ab - 4bc + ab + 2bc
15. Write an expression for "a number x increased by 7".
16. Write an expression for "twice a number y, decreased by 3".
17. Write an expression for "the sum of a number a and its square".
18. If x = 3, what is the value of 2x + 5?
19. If y = -2, what is the value of 3y - 1?
20. If a = 4 and b = 2, what is the value of a² + b²?

Chapter 2: Equations

An equation is a mathematical statement that shows that two expressions are equal. It contains an
equals sign (=).
