• entire surface of the brain
• cortex is a layered structure and the arrangement of cells is a reflection of different
functional areas of cortex
• In order to accommodate the vast number of neurons in human cortex, cortical surface area
needs to be increased
• Therefore the cortex is highly folded forming gyri and sulci




Each cerebral hemispheres can be divided into 5 lobes:
1. Frontal lobe
2. Parietal lobe
3. Temporal lobe
4. Occipital lobe
5. Limbic lobe

Areas of the cortex are connected to one another through subcortical fiber bundles.

1. Association fibersà that pass between areas within one hemisphere
• Superior longitudinal fasciculus
• Inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus
• Cingulum

2. Commissural fibers à that connect a functional area in one hemisphere to the
comparable functional area in the other hemisphere

• Corpus callosum is a commissural fiber
• Anterior commissure
• Posterior commissure




3. Ascending or descending projection fibersà that travel to or from the cortex to
interconnect it with more caudal areas of the CNS.
