3. Steps for CPR - Check for carotid pulse(side of neck) for no more than 10
seconds.
- Not sure of pulse, begin CPR of 30 compressions & 2 breaths
- Use heel of one hand on the lower half of the sternum in the
middle of the chest. Put your other hand on top of the first hand.
- Straighten your arms and press straight down 2 inches but no
more than 2.4 inches at a rate of 100 to 120 per min(2 per sec.)
- Between each compression, completely stop pressing and allow
chest to return to its natural position. Do not lean/rest on chest
between compressions as it can keep the heart from refilling with
blood.
- Stop after 30 compressions. Open airway by using the
head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver(put your hand on their forehead and
tilt the head back, use index and middle finger on the lower jaw
to lift up jaw)
- Don't do the head-tilt/chin-tilt lift if individual may have neck
injury so use jaw-thurst maneuver(grasp the angles of the lower
jaw and lift it with both hands, one on each side, moving the jw
forward. If their lips are closed, open the lower lip using your
thumb.
- Give a breath while watching their chest rise up. Repeat while
giving the second breath(one breath per second)
- Resume compressions while switching quickly from compres-
sions to breaths to minimize interruptions
