, PURPOSE AND PERSPECTIVE OF THE CHAPTER
Chapter 14, Determining Personal Style in a World of Multiple Theories, begins by discussing how the
micro skills framework can be used with many different counseling and psychotherapy frameworks. The
chapter then reviews the major concepts of the book and suggests ideas for your future plans in the
helping fields.
You can be most effective as a counselor or psychotherapist if you generate your own formulation of the
helping process. What is your natural style and how does it relate to skills, session structure, and
alternative theoretical orientations?
CHAPTER GOALS
Awareness, knowledge, skills, and actions developed through the concepts of this chapter will enable you
to:
▲ Briefly examine theories of counseling and psychotherapy as possible future systems for your own
practice of helping.
▲ Review skills, strategies, and competencies that you have developed from our book, courses, or
trainings.
▲ Plan and commit to an intentional lifetime of movement, change, and constant growth as a helping
professional.
This last chapter has two major objectives: to facilitate student self-evaluation of their degree of
competence in the concepts of this text and to ask students to continue on the important journey of
identifying their own preferred style of helping. The chapter is brief, but we also believe it is useful as a
way to point toward the future.
Allow students to briefly review the basics of different theories and discuss the way they use the
microskills. Microskills use varies by theory, but all use them to some extent.
