I am here to do your postpartum assessment and a newborn assessment. Is that okay with you?

- Yes

Okay, I’ll go ahead and start with you, mom

- First, I am going to check your breasts

o Assess – soft, nipples are not cracked, not engorged  milk

- Are you breastfeeding or bottle-feeding mom?

o Breastfeeding  Educate – wear a supportive bra 23 hours a day (milk makes

them heavy, you need support) baby should feed q2-3h, alternate breasts, 15 min

each

▪ Educate  Masticitis
• Localized redness, tenderness, flu-like s/s
o Bottle feeding  bind the breasts, do not do anything to stimulate your
nipples/breasts (no warm showers)

▪ apply ice packs to constrict milk production.
▪ Do not pump.
▪ Burp baby halfway thru feeding

o Have you thought about birth control yet?

▪ Breastfedding = progesterone only

- Next, I am going to assess your abdomen
