QUESTION 1
The scientific approach to the study of personality is based on various theories,
methods and other resources. Discuss the “cognitive and social cognitive theories”
as well as the “occupation-oriented personality theories” of theoretical
approaches to individual differences and personality. (15)
The scientific study of personality relies on a variety of theoretical approaches,
each of which seeks to explain how individual differences develop and how they
influence behaviour. Two important categories of theories are the cognitive and
social-cognitive theories and the occupation-oriented personality theories.
1. Cognitive and Social-Cognitive Theories
These theories emphasise the role of mental processes in shaping personality. They
suggest that personality is not only a set of fixed traits but also a system of
thoughts, beliefs, interpretations, and self-regulation strategies.
Cognitive theories
o Rooted in the idea that individuals actively interpret and give meaning
to their experiences.
o George Kelly’s Personal Construct Theory is central here: people use
mental “constructs” (personal categories of interpretation) to anticipate
and explain events. Personality differences arise because individuals
construe reality differently.
o Personality, therefore, is shaped by how people perceive, categorise,
and predict the world.
Social-cognitive theories
o Expand on cognitive perspectives by integrating the influence of social
learning and environmental factors.
