1. Introduction (2 marks)

Measurement of performance is a building block of modern supply chain logistics,
enabling organizations to find competitive advantage by operating high-performance
operations. An effective system serves three primary functions: measuring
performance using set parameters like fill rates and logistics expenses; control through
setting standards for identifying and rectifying deviations; and directing employees
towards organizational objectives through rewards and motivation. For supplier
relationships, precise measures are crucial, transcending low-level transactional
expenses. These are complemented by lowest total cost of ownership, supplier quality
and delivery, and total supply chain cost, which encourage a holistic approach to value
and efficiency. These are complemented by benchmarking, which is a requirement.
This is comprised of a comparison of an organization's process and performance to
industry leaders, encouraging constant improvement and providing necessary
competitive information. It is a hallmark of high-performing supply chain companies.
Challenges and goals for managing supplier relationships over time (20 marks)

Effective management of supplier relationships is important to maintain a
manufacturing firm efficient and successful, and this necessitates vigilance,
cooperation, and a huge amount of time. Supplier segmentation, or the classification
of suppliers, provides a similar framework that, when used together with the
appropriate tools, supports effective management of suppliers, reduces risk, and
improves financial control (Tan & Sidhu, 2022). But this important supply chain
management discipline comes with a unique set of complexity and goals that change
over time.Importance of Supplier Relationships

Historically, manufacturers often treated suppliers interchangeably, failing to recognize
that each supplier possesses unique strengths for specific needs, whether in parts
manufacturing or staffing (Um & Han, 2021). Not all suppliers offer the same service
levels; some are more efficient, provide better customer service, or offer superior
discounts and pricing. Understanding these distinctions is critical for long-term
success.
