C1. Roles of a Leader and a Manager
Explain the differences between the roles of a leader and a manager.
The difference between the roles of a leader and a manager are with leadership it’s the ability to
provide direction and support to individuals and teams through communicating a clear vision, inspiring
and empowering others to work toward that vision. In the role of a manager working with their staff to
coordinate all aspects of daily patient care on the unit. Ensuring that staff, patients, and patients'
families are communicating. Managers help unit staff members deliver the safest possible care.
C2. Present Leadership and Management Skills
Identify three present leadership skills and three present management skills (i.e., skills you possess).
Three present leadership skills I possess are delegation, conflict resolution and communication. Three
present management skills I possess are precepting and training new grad nurses, auditing charts
with feedback, and taking on the role of a charge nurse which includes staffing and scheduling.
C2a. Leadership and Management Skills Used in Practice
Provide an example of how you use each of the leadership and management skills identified in part
C2 in your practice.
My first example of how I use my leadership skills is delegation, I’m in a charge nurse role most of my
shifts and delegation is constantly being needed. I many times must assess the needs of the patients and
delegate that to the care team. One specific example of delegation is I had a nurse who was training
another nurse, so she was without an assignment. The rest of the floor was very busy, so I delegated
help with medication pass to that RN. Another example of leadership skills I possess in my practice is
conflict resolution, in a hospital setting we encounter many types of patients. There are times where the
patient can become unrealistic with patient care, can be verbally aggressive, or even verbally
inappropriate with the staff. In a particular incident with a patient that became verbally aggressive with
the nurse so as the charge nurse I implemented conflict resolution by allowing the patient to express
their concerns and frustrations creating a plan of care that was pleasing to the patient and assigned
nurse. My last example of how I use my leadership skills is communication, being able to communicate
clearly and effectively is an important skill for nursing leadership. Discussing medical treatment in an
