can understand how to predict inventory trends in the future by generating a
report to determine the popularity of each genre per month. With this we can
anticipate our customers needs and ensure we have the appropriate stock
available for when a new movie is released in that genre.
1. The data being used for this report will contain all information
needed to get a full picture of the rental, when the rental
occurred, what store the rental was at so we can determine genre
by location if needed. The film that was rented and most
importantly the genre of that film

• rental.rental_date
• staff.store_id

4. Field that will require a custom transformation
• It’s important to the viewer of the report to get as much
information as possible without having to parse through
needless data. Dates can be stored in a lengthy format and
all we need from our date field will be the name of the month.
So we will be transforming the date field to a character field
that shows the month as ‘Mon yyyy’.

• DETAILED REPORT – The detailed report is used to see
each transaction that occurred in full detail. It can be
utilized to not only find the most popular genre, but it can
be used to see the most popular title, or the busiest dates
of the month, or even the highest selling stores.
• SUMMARY REPORT – The summary report is used to
get a high level overview of the data to see a list of how
many movies, per genre, per month were rented. We are
also going to sort it so we can quickly determine which
genre was most popular that month.
6. Frequency of refresh
• This report should be refreshed monthly in order to have
the data captured from the previous month. On the first day
of every month the report should be ran and the numbers
presented to store managers so that the appropriate
inventory selections can be made for that month based on
previous years and current trends.
