environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution good

inclusively, and effectively. This essay evaluates the concept of environmental
governance and describes its main aspects as they relate to effective environmental
management.
Understanding Environmental Governance
Environmental governance refers to the mechanisms through which environmental
policies are formulated, implemented, and enforced. It includes both formal structures
like government departments and legal frameworks, and informal structures such as
civil society participation. At its core, governance addresses who has authority, how
decisions are made, and how power is exercised (LEG2601, Study Guide, page 49).
Good environmental governance ensures that environmental protection is balanced with
social and economic development, making it integral to sustainable development.
Key Aspects of Environmental Governance
One of the most critical aspects of environmental governance is stakeholder
participation. Participation refers to the involvement of communities, NGOs, the private
sector, and individuals in environmental decision-making. This inclusive approach
allows for better-informed decisions and encourages ownership of environmental
policies. In South Africa, the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) ensures
