A common fraction is a way of representing a portion of a whole. It is written with one
number placed above another and separated by a horizontal line. The top part is known
as the numerator, and the bottom part is the denominator.
1.2 Two Important Concepts from the Definition (4 marks)
Numerator: This refers to the number above the line in a fraction. It indicates
how many parts of the whole are being considered.
Denominator: This is the number below the line. It tells us into how many equal
sections the whole is divided.
