Phase FAL Classroom
Introduction
Selecting appropriate literary texts for Intermediate Phase learners in a First Additional
Language (FAL) context is a critical component of effective language instruction. In
South African classrooms where learners come from diverse cultural, linguistic, and
socio-economic backgrounds the choice of reading material must be intentional and
pedagogically sound. As outlined in Tutorial Letter 501 (2025), texts used in the FAL
classroom must not only develop learners' language proficiency but also support their
emotional, cognitive, moral, and social growth. This means that texts should be
developmentally appropriate in terms of complexity and themes, culturally and
contextually relevant, ethically enriching, and inclusive of diverse learner identities and
experiences.
This essay evaluates two short stories The Robin’s Lament by Amy Gozelski and Why
the Bat Flies at Night by Kgosi Kgosi in terms of their suitability for an Intermediate
Phase South African FAL classroom. The analysis is structured around four core
aspects outlined in Tutorial Letter 501: (1) age appropriateness in terms of style and
themes, (2) moral and ethical learning opportunities, (3) the extent to which the text
supports emotional and mental development, and (4) the promotion of inclusivity in the
classroom. Through this evaluation, the essay will argue that while both stories carry
pedagogical value, Why the Bat Flies at Night offers greater alignment with curriculum
goals, learner needs, and contextual realities in the South African FAL Intermediate
Phase.
