Advancements in Sustainable Pavement Materials

Introduction The reason that pavement engineering focused on sustainability has increased in terms of research is that environmental problems have been produced by traditional asphalt manufacturing, and customers desire more green solutions. According to Praticò et al. (2020), hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement construction practices have low energy usage rates combined with low emission statistics. Since society is becoming more concerned about the problems of climate change, warm mix asphalt (WMA) and recycled material implementation are widely used. Promising pathways for paving construction sustainability are made available by recycling waste plastic and rubber and recycled concrete aggregates (RCA). The main goal of this document is to research innovative sustainable pavement material progress that involves recycled substance usage alongside low-temperature asphalt creation and reflective surface solutions for urban heat island reduction. The work studies the benefits, challenges, and possible strengths of recent innovations by analyzing recent academic studies.

Abstract

Construction professionals pay increasing attention to sustainable pavement solutions because

they strive to diminish sectoral environmental effects. Heat Mix asphalt systems and heat

reflective coatings are reviewed in this paper and applied with recycled materials for

Contemporary sustainable pavement methods. Including recycled concrete aggregates (RCA),

plastics, and tire rubber in sustainable asphalt materials allows for reaching higher standards of

that material, optimizing the amount of virgin material originating from natural resources. WMA

technology considers environmental standards by reducing production temperatures, electricity

consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Heat-reflective coatings and urban climate

resistance mitigate the urban heat island phenomenon, including pavements and cool surface

materials. Life Cycle Assessment is the tool for these technologies' environmental effects and

monetary outcomes. The document has three key recommendations: expanded recycled material

use, cool pavement system deployment, and increased Life Cycle Assessment implementation

levels.
