Discussion Post 1

Many social, political, and institutional practices hindered early responses to Acquired

Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). According to the movie And the Band Played

On (1993), the lack of reaction from government organizations and politicians wasted much

time due to the disease’s initially perceived isolation from the gay community (ReRuners,

2023). This was coupled with a conflict of interest between health organizations like the CDC

and the NIH, which hampered research and response. Moreover, the blood industry failed to

adopt protective measures, which also posed a threat to people's lives. These delays caused

by stigma and profit uncertainty cost the lives of many.

I believe that spread of AIDS could have been considerably slowed or even stopped if

there had been a prompt and fair response. Prevention, education, and research grant

interventions should have been conducted earlier to contain the human immunodeficiency

virus (HIV) scourge. Coolshaving watched the film, and it was disappointing to discover that

pride, discrimination, and political stagnation led to the development of the epidemic.

Advocacy is evidenced by activists and journalists like Randy Shilt's efforts to confront the

silence and denial around the epidemic (Ortiz, 2023). They effectively contributed to altering

public perception and changing policies on the matter.
Today, HIV/AIDS does not garner the attention it garnered in the past due to

improved treatment options and shifts in people’s perception. Though it is still a global

concern, it is prevalent in low-income and developing nations and communities. In the 21st

century, people with HIV can live relatively normal lives due to antiretroviral therapies, but

not all service has this benefit (Bekker et al., 2023). This means that prejudice is still present,

although in a limited way, and thus, education on the matter is still relevant. Early activism

has led to improvement in the right response; however, the fight against HIV/AIDS goes on

and needs attention.

Discussion Post 2

The nature and level of psychosocial stress depend on occupation and culture among
middle-aged adults. Occupation affects stress about the demand, responsibility, and flexibility
