Ontological and Epistemological Assumptions in Educational Research Paradigms
Compared

1. Introduction

In educational research, the philosophical assumptions underpinning inquiry are as important as
the methods used. These assumptions ontology (the nature of reality) and epistemology (the
nature of knowledge) inform the paradigms that shape how researchers understand, investigate,
and interpret educational phenomena.

This essay compares and contrasts the ontological and epistemological foundations of six major
research paradigms: Positivism, Interpretivism, Critical Theory, Postmodernism, Critical
Realism, and Decoloniality. It explores how each paradigm perceives reality, constructs
knowledge, and positions the researcher in the process of inquiry.

The analysis begins with a conceptual clarification of ontology and epistemology and then
moves into a detailed review of each paradigm. The core aim is to evaluate which of these
paradigms makes the strongest contribution to educational practice, particularly in addressing
equity, inclusion, curriculum transformation, and teacher empowerment in the South African
context.

The conclusion offers a critical reflection on the most suitable paradigm for advancing education
in postcolonial, multilingual, and socioeconomically unequal environments.

2. Ontology and Epistemology

2.1 Ontology

Ontology is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature of being, existence, or reality
(Scotland, 2012). In educational research, ontology relates to what researchers believe about the
nature of reality in teaching and learning contexts. Does reality exist independently of human
perception, or is it socially constructed through experiences and interactions?

, In a positivist paradigm, ontology assumes a realist stance: that reality exists objectively and can
be measured and observed without bias. Conversely, interpretivist and postmodern paradigms
adopt a relativist ontology, suggesting that reality is subjective and multiple, shaped by
individual perspectives, language, and cultural context.

Ontological beliefs influence how educational researchers frame their research problems. For
instance, if one believes that learning barriers are universally experienced (realism), they will
search for general patterns. If one sees learning as context-specific (relativism), they will explore
individual learner narratives and meaning-making.

Understanding ontology allows researchers to position themselves in relation to their subject
matter. This is especially important in South African classrooms, where historical inequalities,
multilingualism, and social diversity affect how education is experienced and understood.

2.2 Epistemology

Epistemology deals with the nature, origin, and scope of knowledge how we know what we
know. In education research, epistemology underpins the methods by which knowledge is
acquired, validated, and interpreted (Cohen, Manion & Morrison, 2018).

A positivist epistemology holds that knowledge is objective, observable, and measurable. It
assumes a neutral researcher who can uncover truth through experimentation and quantitative
methods. In contrast, an interpretivist or critical epistemology suggests that knowledge is
subjective, co-constructed by researchers and participants through dialogue and interaction.

Critical theorists argue that knowledge is shaped by power relations and social structures; thus,
educational research should not only describe reality but also seek to transform unjust systems
(Kincheloe & McLaren, 2011). Postmodernism, on the other hand, challenges the idea of fixed
knowledge, embracing fragmentation, contradiction, and uncertainty.

In multilingual and culturally diverse classrooms, epistemological assumptions influence how
teachers understand learners’ experiences. Are learners’ voices valued as valid sources of
knowledge? Do teachers believe in one standardised curriculum (positivist) or multiple
narratives and knowledges (decolonial or interpretivist)?
