,QUESTION 1

1.1 What is classroom management, and what should its primary aim be?

Classroom management describes the actions, practices, and strategies that educators

employ to build and sustain an effective learning setting by encouraging student

participation, maintaining order, and facilitating learning (Evertson & Weinstein, 2013). It

includes the teacher’s capability to organise and plan classroom activities, establish clear

expectations, and uphold discipline to promote learner involvement. (Ormrod, 2016).

Effective classroom management creates an environment where learners feel respected,

valued, and safe, motivating them to engage fully with the learning activities and content

provided in class.

1.2 Why is classroom management critical to effective teaching and learning? (150

words)

Classroom management is essential for effective teaching and learning as it establishes

a disciplined and structured environment that supports learners' emotional well-being and

academic engagement (Marzano, 2011). A classroom managed well reduces distractions

and disruptions, enabling teachers to deliver lessons efficiently while helping learners

focus and participate actively (Ormrod, 2016). When learners understand what is

expected and function within defined behavioural limits, they are more likely to build

, positive learning behaviours, feel secure, and take accountability for their learning

(Evertson & Emmer, 2017). Efficient classroom management also ensures that

instructional time is utilised fully, minimising the time lost due to behavioural problems.

1.3 Discuss two approaches to classroom management that teachers use to

encourage positive behavior.

Teachers utilise proactive and supportive methods in classroom management to promote

positive behaviour. A proactive method consists of setting clear routines, expectations,

and rules from the start to avoid misbehaviour and to make sure learners know what is

expected (Evertson & Emmer, 2017). This includes collaboratively creating classroom

rules, maintaining consistent routines, and using positive reinforcement to guide learner

behaviour. Such an approach helps in creating a predictable learning environment, which

decreases learners' anxiety and uncertainty (Ormrod, 2016). A supportive method

focuses on recognising and reinforcing positive behaviours and providing feedback to

help learners develop self-regulation skills (Marzano, 2011).

1.4 Classroom management can be challenging for teachers due to various

factors. Discuss two of these factors and provide solutions for them.

A factor that makes classroom management challenging is learner diversity, which

includes differences in cultural backgrounds, behavioural needs, and learning styles
