Why are growth patterns important/helpful to understand or have some knowledge about as a
teacher? - ANS Children go through a rapid growth period from birth to age 5. From age 6 to
the onset of adolescence, growth slows but still increases steadily. When physical growth is
rapid, the ability to learn new motor skills generally decreases. Because the growth rate slows
during the elementary school years, this is an excellent window of time for children to learn
motor skills. In general, children with a mesomorphic body type perform best in activities
requiring strength, speed, and agility, such as most team sports. A mesomorph has a
predominance of muscle and bone and is often labeled "muscled." An ectomorph is extremely
thin, with a minimum of muscle development, and is characterized as "skinny." Ectomorphic
children may be less proficient in activities requiring strength and power but are able to
perform well in aerobic endurance activities such as jogging, cross-country running, and track
and field. An endomorph is soft and round, with an excessively protruding abdomen.
Endomorphic children may perform poorly in many areas, including aerobic and anaerobic skill-
oriented activities. Overweight children are generally at a disadvantage in all phases of physical
performance. Boys' motor performance is related to skeletal maturity because a more mature
boy usually performs better on motor tasks. For girls, however, motor performance seems
unrelated to physiological maturity. Late maturation is commonly associated with exceptional
motor performance. P.E. programs often ask students to learn at the same rate, regardless of
the maturation level. This practice may be detrimental to the development of students who are
maturing at a faster or slower rate. Students do not mature at the same rate and are not at
similar levels of readiness to learn. Boys and girls can participate on somewhat even terms in
activities demanding leg str
Why is it important to encourage young children to try a variety of skills/sports? -
ANS Because all children deserve an equal opportunity to learn sports skills, teachers must
ensure that all children play all positions and receive similar amounts of practice time. Helping
children learn all skills and play all positions at an early age gives them equal opportunity to be
successful.
2 concerns/guidelines for children when they are outside in a hot and humid climate -
ANS (1) Be sure children are hydrated 20 to 30 minutes before strenuous activity. During the

, activity, require periodic drinking of cold water every 20 minutes for a child weighing 88
pounds.
(2) Clothing should be lightweight and limited to one layer of absorbent material to facilitate
the evaporation of sweat and expose as much skin as possible. Replace sweat-saturated
garments with dry ones. Never use rubberized sweat suits in an attempt to accelerate weight
loss.
2 concerns/guidelines for resistance training with children - ANS (1) All workouts should be
closely supervised by qualified adults, and the exercise environment should be safe and free of
hazards. The exercise area should be large enough so the exercises can be performed correctly.
(2) Students should warm up for 5 to 10 minutes before strength training.
What is an anticipatory "set?" Give an example - ANS Anticipatory set is a technique
designed to focus students on an upcoming instructional concept and segue to the next portion
of the lesson.
Example: · "Think of activities that require body strength and be ready to name some when
called upon. (Briefly allow time for thinking and discussion.) This week we are going to learn
some activities that will help us become stronger."
What is an instructional "cue?" Give an example - ANS Instructional cues are keywords that
quickly and efficiently communicate proper technique and the performance of skills and
movement tasks.
Example: "Begin with your throwing arm farthest from the target"
What is the importance of closure to a lesson? Give an example - ANS Closure helps increase
retention because students have to think about what they have learned. Closure is also a time
to remind children to tell their parents and others what they have learned.
Example: · "Describe 2 or 3 key components of skill performance to your partner."
What is an open-ended task? Give an example - ANS This approach offers wide latitude for
making decisions about the content of the lesson. You decide the educational outcome, and
students determine how to reach it.
Example: Develop a game that requires 4 passes before a shot on goal
