in the South African Public Sector
1. Introduction
Employee wellness and occupational health and safety (OHS) are central pillars of any
well-functioning workforce. In the South African public sector, which serves as the
backbone of the nation’s service delivery and policy implementation, these components
are not only important for protecting workers but also crucial for institutional
performance and sustainability. Employee wellness focuses on the overall well-being of
worker’s physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally, while OHS involves creating a
safe and hazard-free working environment. This paper critically analyses the meaning
and scope of both concepts, discusses contributing factors to workplace accidents, and
offers examples and recommendations based on the South African context.
