II. Management

 Role of Nurse Manager (Five Managerial Functions):Planning: Identify problems,
create goals to meet unit demands.
 Organizing: Acquiring, managing, and mobilizing resources for clinical and financial
objectives.
 Staffing: Hiring, orienting, scheduling.
 Directing: Achieving goals by leading others, within resource constraints.
 Controlling: Evaluation of clinical quality and financial accountability.
 Management Structure: Centralized: Senior managers make decisions with little group
input.
 Decentralized: Decisions made by those most knowledgeable about issues.
 Shared Governance: Nurses intimately involved in patient care decisions.
 Conflict Management and Engagement: Conflict Management: Process to work
through conflicts, minimizing negative effects and promoting positive consequences.
 Conflict Engagement: Teaches skills to perform well in the face of conflict, rather than
avoiding it.

III. Leadership vs. Management

 Key Distinction: Leaders focus on motivating and directing to achieve goals, often
through influence. Managers focus on the functional aspects of planning, organizing,
staffing, directing, and controlling resources and processes. While there's overlap,
leadership inspires and guides, while management organizes and executes.

 Significance: Empowers organizations to:
 Attract and retain top talent.
 Improve care, safety, and satisfaction.
 Foster a collaborative culture.
 Advance nursing standards and practice.

encouraging disclosure of errors without fear of punitive action.

V. Managing Change

 Factors Prompting Change in Healthcare: Increased chronically ill and older people,
increased government/industry role, rising costs, changing delivery patterns.
 Considerations for Planned Change: What is amenable to change, how the group
functions, readiness for change, major/minor changes.
 Reasons for Resistance to Change: Threat to self, lack of understanding, limited
tolerance for change, disagreements about benefits, fear of increased workload.
 Overcoming Resistance to Change: Explain clearly, list advantages, relate to existing
beliefs, provide opportunities for open communication, indicate evaluation methods,
introduce gradually, provide incentives.
VI. Developing Leadership Skills in Beginning Nurses

 Areas for Development: Patient care coordination (setting goals, evaluating time
management), Clinical Nurse Leader role (facilitating, coordinating, overseeing care,
patient advocacy, educator), Delegation of nursing care, Understanding administrative
structure, Support for leadership training (mentorship, preceptorship, professional
organizations, continuing education), Developing resilience.
VII. Delegation of Nursing Care

 Definition: Assigning responsibility for tasks to another person, while retaining
accountability for the outcome.
 ANA Principles for Delegating Care:RN is responsible for initial patient assessment,
discharge planning, health education, care planning, triage, interpretation of patient data,
care of invasive lines, and administering parenteral medications.
 Delegate tasks like basic care activities, collecting vital signs, simple dressing changes,
transfers, and postmortem care to appropriate personnel.
 RN is responsible and accountable for nursing practice and supervises any assistive
personnel (AP) providing direct patient care.
 Purpose of AP is to work in a supportive role to the RN.
 Considerations When Delegating: Stability of patient’s condition, complexity of
activity, potential for harm, predictability of outcome, overall context of other patient
needs.
