1. Characteristics That Distinguish a Short Story from a Novel
Three useful characteristics that help distinguish a short story from a novel are length,
focus, and limited character development. A short story is brief and typically focuses on
a single event, conflict, or theme. This helps me as a reader or writer because it
encourages clarity and conciseness. Secondly, short stories usually center on one main
plot or idea, unlike novels which can explore multiple subplots. This singular focus
makes it easier to understand the message or theme. Lastly, character development in
short stories is more limited than in novels. Instead of detailed backstories, characters
are revealed quickly through their actions or thoughts, which helps maintain the story’s
pace. These characteristics make short stories more accessible and impactful in a
shorter time.
2. Understanding First-, Second-, and Third-Person Narration
Unit 3 helped me clearly understand the differences between the three types of
narration. First-person narration uses "I" or "we" and presents the story through the
narrator’s own eyes. This makes the story feel personal and helps the reader connect
deeply with the narrator’s thoughts and emotions. Second-person narration addresses
the reader directly using “you,” placing the reader in the story. This is less common but
creates an immersive experience. Third-person narration uses "he," "she," or "they"
and can be either limited (focused on one character’s perspective) or omniscient (all-
knowing). Understanding these distinctions helps me better identify who is telling the
story and how that affects the tone, bias, and perspective.
3. Plot Elements That Drive Short Stories
In my opinion, the three plot elements that most effectively drive a short story are
conflict, climax, and resolution. The conflict is essential because it introduces the
problem or tension that moves the story forward. Without conflict, the story lack’s
purpose. The climax is the most intense point, where the main conflict reaches its peak,
this keeps the reader engaged and emotionally invested. Lastly, the resolution provides
closure by solving the conflict or offering insight. These three elements are important
