,Question 1 – Teaching Listening (30 marks)

1.1 Discuss the six stages of the listening process.

(10 marks)

The listening process is an active, multi-step procedure that involves both mental and
physical engagement. The six stages of the listening process are:

o Hearing:
This is the physical reception of sound waves through the ears. It involves
detecting auditory stimuli such as tone, pitch, and volume. Hearing is a passive
stage, but it is the foundation of the listening process.
o Receiving:
At this stage, the brain acknowledges and registers the sounds that have been
heard. The listener identifies the speech signals and prepares to decode them.
This stage is influenced by the listener’s attention span and environmental
factors such as noise.
o Understanding:
Understanding involves interpreting the message by assigning meaning to the
words and sentences heard. The listener uses prior knowledge, language skills,
and context to comprehend what is being said.
o Evaluating:
In this stage, the listener critically analyses the message by considering its
truthfulness, relevance, and logic. This includes identifying bias, tone, and the
speaker’s intent. The listener also forms opinions and judgments at this stage.
o Responding:
The listener provides feedback either verbally or non-verbally. Responses may
include nodding, asking questions, summarising points, or offering agreement or
disagreement. This stage confirms to the speaker that the listener is engaged.
o Remembering:
This is the ability to recall or retain the information heard. Retention depends on

, factors such as interest, clarity of message, repetition, and emotional connection.
Effective listeners store useful information for future use.

1.2 Explain the three types of listening outlined in the CAPS document.

(10 marks)

The CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) document (2011:15–17)
identifies the following three types of listening that learners must develop:

o Listening for Specific Information:
This type of listening involves focusing on particular facts, details, or data
presented in spoken language. Learners listen with the purpose of identifying
specific answers or elements such as names, dates, statistics, or key phrases.
This type is often used in academic settings and comprehension activities.
o Listening for Critical Analysis and Evaluation:
This type of listening goes beyond surface understanding and requires learners
to think critically about the content. It involves evaluating the speaker’s message,
identifying assumptions, analysing persuasive techniques, assessing credibility,
and forming independent judgments. It is crucial for oral presentations, debates,
and analysing speeches.
o Listening for Appreciation and Interaction:
This type of listening is associated with enjoyment and emotional engagement. It
includes listening to music, poetry, storytelling, or dramatic readings. It
encourages learners to appreciate tone, rhythm, mood, and creative expression.
Additionally, it fosters interaction through empathy, personal response, and
shared cultural experience.

1.3 Design a listening activity for Ms Khumalo’s Grade 10 class based on the
