Discuss the implications of using the bell curve to define "normality" in society

from each other. Many people have used it to define what is “normal” in society and
education. This has had both good and bad effects. In this essay, we will look at where
the bell curve comes from, how it defines normality, how it affects education and
society, and what people say against it. We will also look at other ways to understand
human differences.
Origins and Evolution
The bell curve, also called the normal distribution curve, comes from the work of Carl
Friedrich Gauss in the 1800s. He used it to show how things like errors in
measurements were spread out. Later, Francis Galton used it to study human traits like
height and intelligence. Over time, people started to use the bell curve to explain how
human abilities are spread out in a group. They said most people are “average,” and
only a few are either “above average” or “below average.”
Defining "Normality"
The bell curve has shaped how we see "normal" in both society and schools. In this
curve, the middle part is seen as normal, and the ends are seen as different or unusual.
In education, learners in the middle are seen as performing “normally.” Those who do
better or worse are called “gifted” or “struggling.” This way of thinking makes it seem like
being average is best, and anything different is a problem or a special case.
