Question 1: Places of articulation
1.1 The letter m is a bilabial sound. This means it is made by using both lips. Now, here
are examples of different sounds and why they are called by those names:
a) Palatal – sheesh
The sound sh is made by raising the middle part of the tongue to the hard palate
(the roof of the mouth), so it’s called palatal.
b) Alveolar – tin
The n sound is made by touching the tip of the tongue to the alveolar ridge (just
behind your top front teeth). That’s why it is called alveolar.
c) Labio-dental – van
The v sound is made by putting your bottom lip against your top front teeth.
That’s why it’s called labio-dental (lip and teeth).
d) Velar – back
The k sound is made at the back of the mouth, where the tongue touches the
soft part of the mouth roof (called the velum), so it’s called velar.
e) Dental – thin
The th sound is made when the tongue touches the top teeth, so it’s called
dental.
f) Glottal – uh-oh
