knowledge and learning. The four key paradigms – positivism, interpretivism, critical
theory, and post-structuralism – each represent different epistemological positions that
influence curriculum aims, knowledge selection, teaching strategies, and assessment.
Positivism
Paradigm Description:
Positivism is grounded in the belief that knowledge is objective, measurable, and
derived from scientific observation (Cohen, Manion & Morrison, 2018). It assumes that
reality is external and can be systematically understood.
Curriculum Application:
Aims: To develop learners' ability to observe, analyse and reproduce objective
knowledge.
Knowledge Selection: Emphasis is placed on factual, scientific content that can
be tested and verified.
Teaching Strategies: Teacher-centred methods such as direct instruction, rote
learning, and standardised lessons dominate.
Assessment Approaches: Standardised tests, exams, and objective measures
like multiple-choice questions are preferred.
Example: A mathematics curriculum focusing on formula application and calculation
accuracy aligns with positivist ideals.
