Title: Rethinking Mathematics: A Reflection on its Nature, Role, and Teaching
Introduction
Mathematics is often perceived as a rigid subject centered on rules, formulas, and
procedures. However, my studies in Units 1 and 2 of MTE1501 have reshaped this
view. Mathematics is not merely about rote memorization—it is a dynamic, creative, and
human endeavor involving pattern recognition, logical reasoning, and problem-solving.
As a student teacher preparing to address a community seminar, I have reflected
deeply on what mathematics truly is, its societal significance, and how this
understanding will guide my future teaching practice.
The Nature of Mathematics
Mathematics is best understood as a human activity that involves exploration,
abstraction, and communication of patterns and relationships. It is not limited to a set of
rules or formulas but is a way of thinking and making sense of the world. Unit 1
emphasizes that mathematics is a process rather than a product—a tool to reason
logically, model phenomena, and solve problems creatively. According to Bishop
(1988), mathematics involves six fundamental activities: counting, locating, measuring,
designing, playing, and explaining. This perspective positions mathematics as a
culturally and socially constructed activity that evolves with human needs and contexts.
Mathematics in Society
Mathematics is indispensable to the functioning of modern societies. It underpins
various aspects of daily life, including commerce, technology, medicine, construction,
and communication. Beyond practical use, mathematics fosters critical thinking and
analytical skills, enabling citizens to make informed decisions.
