,Question 1 – Short Answer Questions (20 Marks)

In my community, the philosophy of Ubuntu is deeply woven into everyday

life, manifesting through acts of compassion, solidarity, and mutual support.

Ubuntu, a Nguni Bantu term meaning "humanity toward others,"

emphasizes the interconnectedness of all people and is commonly

expressed in the phrase, "I am because we are" (Mbiti, 1990). This

worldview is reflected in how community members relate to one another,

especially during times of need. These gestures of kindness are not merely

acts of charity, but rather expressions of a collective moral duty embedded

in communal living (Tutu, 1999).

Sharing of resources is another strong indication of Ubuntu in practice. The
spirit of Ubuntu also discourages individualism and selfishness, instead
promoting humility, empathy, and shared responsibility for the welfare of
others (Ramose, 2002). Community gatherings such as, weddings, and
traditional ceremonies are not private affairs but collective efforts, where
everyone contributes in some formbe it through labor, financial support, or
simply showing presence. These events exemplify Ubuntu by prioritising
the communal over the individual, affirming the principle that a person’s
identity and well-being are inherently linked to their community (Letseka,
2012).

respectful and dignified manner. Through patient mediation and active

listening, a mutually acceptable compromise was eventually reached. What

followed was a shared meal between the two families, an act symbolising

reconciliation and the restoration of social harmony.

This experience was a vivid demonstration of Ubuntu values such as

respect, forgiveness, and unity. Ubuntu teaches that relationships and

communal harmony are more important than individual pride or the desire

to be “right” (Tutu, 1999). The emphasis on restoring peace rather than

assigning blame reflects a justice system rooted in reconciliation and the
