Technology Education supports social transformation by creating equitable

opportunities for all learners, especially those disadvantaged under

apartheid. It aims to redress past inequalities and develop skilled citizens to

contribute to national development (Department of Basic Education, 2011).

, Active and critical learning encourages learners to interact with content

meaningfully, apply cognitive skills, and critically analyse information. This

participatory approach fosters independent thinking and learner autonomy

(Brookfield, 2012).

Creativity and critical thinking are foundational in solving technological

problems. They enable learners to generate original ideas and evaluate

solutions logically. These skills are vital in the design process and align

with Bloom’s higher-order thinking skills (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001).

Activity 1.3 Questions 1,5 &7, page 41. (12)

1. Difference Between Structure and Mechanism

A structure is a stable framework designed to support loads, such as

bridges or buildings. It remains stationary and is primarily focused on

strength and stability. In contrast, a mechanism involves moving parts that

transmit motion or energyfor example, gears, levers, and pulleys (Hales &

Gooch, 2012). While structures provide physical support, mechanisms

create movement and functionality.
