Section A: History of Education
Question 1.1: What is meant by the expression “Global North and Global South”?
[15 Marks]

The terms “Global North” and “Global South” are widely used to highlight the socio-
economic and political divide between developed and developing regions of the world.
These terms are not strictly geographical; rather, they reflect historical, economic, and
power dynamics stemming largely from colonial and imperial legacies.

Global North

The “Global North” refers to countries that are generally economically advanced,
industrialised, and politically influential. This group includes much of Western Europe
(such as Germany, France, and the United Kingdom), North America (the United States
and Canada), and other developed countries like Japan and Australia. These nations
tend to have high GDPs, strong infrastructure, access to advanced technology, and
dominant roles in international institutions such as the UN, World Bank, and IMF.

Global South

The “Global South” includes countries in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia
(excluding some parts like Japan), and Oceania. Many of these nations were colonised
during the 18th and 19th centuries, and their socio-economic structures were
significantly shaped by foreign domination. Today, these countries often face issues
such as poverty, limited access to quality education, and dependency on aid or loans
from the North. Their voices are frequently marginalised in global policy-making and
academic discourse.

In the Context of Education

In education, the divide is particularly visible in the dominance of the Global North in the
production and dissemination of knowledge. Most academic journals, textbooks, and

, educational frameworks reflect Euro-American ideologies and values. This can
marginalise the perspectives, histories, and indigenous knowledge systems of the
Global South. Scholars from the South often encounter barriers in publishing and
research funding, and educational policies are sometimes influenced by Northern
models that may not suit local contexts.

In summary, the “Global North” and “Global South” are conceptual tools used to
understand global inequality, especially in sectors like education, where power,
influence, and representation are unequally distributed. Addressing this imbalance
requires critical engagement with knowledge production and the decolonisation of
educational spaces.
