Question 1 – Short Answer Questions (20 Marks) Each question carries five
marks. Suggested length: ±120 words per question. 1.1 Think about your
personal experiences of living in a community. In what ways does the idea of
Ubuntu shape how people in your community treat and help one another? (5
marks)

1.1 Ubuntu and Community Life (±120 words, 5 marks)

In my community, the idea of Ubuntu—"I am because we are"—shapes how people treat and
support one another in powerful ways. Ubuntu promotes compassion, mutual respect, and
shared responsibility. For example, when a family experiences hardship, neighbours offer food,
emotional support, or financial help without expecting anything in return. Community members
often come together for funerals, weddings, and other key life events, demonstrating solidarity
and empathy. Children are cared for by the whole community, not just their parents, reinforcing
the value of collective upbringing. Ubuntu also encourages dialogue and forgiveness when
conflicts arise, helping to maintain peace and social harmony. This philosophy creates a strong
sense of belonging and interdependence that strengthens the fabric of our community.

In communities where Ubuntu is a guiding principle, you would typically observe:

,  Mutual Support and Help: People are more likely to offer practical assistance to
neighbors in need, whether it's helping with chores, providing food during difficult times,
or contributing to community projects. There's a strong sense of collective responsibility.
 Empathy and Compassion: There's an understanding that everyone faces challenges,
and a willingness to listen, understand, and show kindness to others, even those who may
have made mistakes.
 Conflict Resolution through Dialogue: Rather than focusing on punishment, the
emphasis is often on restoring harmony and relationships through dialogue and
understanding, ensuring that everyone's voice is heard.
 Sharing and Generosity: Resources, knowledge, and even joy are often shared freely,
fostering a sense of abundance and collective prosperity.
 Respect for Elders and Community Leaders: There's a deep respect for the wisdom
and experience of elders, and community leaders often play a role in guiding and
nurturing the collective.
 Inclusivity: The well-being of the entire community is paramount, and efforts are made
to ensure that no one is left behind or marginalized.

Essentially, in a community shaped by Ubuntu, individual actions are viewed through the lens of
their impact on the collective, leading to a more compassionate, supportive, and interconnected
way of living.

1.2 Describe a situation you have seen or been part of where people made
peace after a disagreement. How does making up show the values of
Ubuntu? (5 marks)

1.2 Making Peace and the Values of Ubuntu (±120 words, 5 marks)

I once witnessed a disagreement between two neighbours over boundary issues that escalated
into a heated argument. Instead of allowing the conflict to continue, elders from the community
intervened and called a meeting under a tree, a traditional setting for resolving disputes. Each
person was given a chance to speak, and the focus was on restoring harmony rather than
assigning blame. Eventually, both neighbours apologised and shook hands, agreeing to move
forward respectfully. This act of reconciliation reflected the core values of Ubuntu—
forgiveness, empathy, respect, and interconnectedness. Making peace was not just about
ending the conflict; it was about restoring relationships and reaffirming that the wellbeing of
one person is tied to the wellbeing of all.
