ASSIGNMENT 6 2025
UNIQUE NO. 546965
DUE DATE: 16 MAY 2025
, Forum Assignment Response: Assessment 6 – 546965
After reviewing both articles, it is evident that the South African Social Security Agency
(SASSA) has long been affected by systemic corruption and technological weaknesses,
particularly in how social grants such as the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant are
distributed.
1. Main Issues Highlighted in the Articles
The two major concerns raised are corruption and digital fraud:
Corruption in Tender Processes:
The first article details how SASSA unlawfully awarded a R10-billion contract to
Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), a move later ruled invalid by the courts. Civil
society organisations like Corruption Watch have demanded accountability for
years. However, parliamentary oversight remained weak until January 2025,
when a full investigation into SASSA’s operations was finally initiated.
Technological Vulnerabilities in the SRD System:
The second article, authored by two university students, reveals major flaws in
the SRD grant application system. Automated fraud schemes exploited the
platform, allowing fake applications—especially from newly eligible 18-year-olds.
In many cases, grants were approved for people using false or stolen ID
numbers, while legitimate beneficiaries were unfairly excluded.
2. Why These Issues Have Persisted
Several factors have contributed to the persistence of these problems:
Lack of Accountability:
Oversight bodies and Parliament have historically failed to act decisively against
irregularities, enabling corrupt practices to continue unchecked.
