NR 293 Pharmacology Exam 3: Chamberlian
Growth hormone
-Stimulates growth in the tissue and bone
-These drugs cannot be given orally
-GH acts on newly forming bone
Drugs for growth hormone deficiency
-Somatrem
-Somatropin(used to treat growth failure in children because of the pituitary GH deficiency)
Drugs for growth hormone excess
-Bromocriptine(inhibit the release of GH from the pituitary gland)
-Octreotide(supresses GH release)
When is growth hormone to be prescriibed
-If a child's height is well below the standard for specified age
-Must be administered before the epiphyses are fused
Acromegaly
-Excessive growth after puberty
-Can occur with GH hyper-secretion, and are frequently caused by a pituitary tumor
-If not destroyed by radiation, bromocriptine is then used
Hypothyroidism
-Decrease in thyroid hormone secretion
Primary hypothyroidism
-Thyroid gland disorder
-More common
Secondary hypothyroidism
Lack of TSH secretion
, Drug of choice for hypothyroidism
Levothyroxine; drug of choice for replacement therapy for the treatment of hypothyroidism
Levothyroxine
-Increases the levels of T3 and T4
-Also used to treat simple goiter and chronic lymphatic (Hashimoto) thyroiditis
ACTION
-Increases metabolism
CONTRAINDICATIONS
-Thyrotoxicosis, MI, severe renal disease
INTERACTIONS
-Increased cardiac of anticoagulants, vasopressors, decongestants
-Decreased effects of antidiabetics, digitalis
-Decreased absorption with cholestyramine, colestipol
SIDE EFFECTS
-Nervousness, insomnia, weight loss
-Tremors, headache
-N/V, diarrhea, cramps
-Tachycardia, palpitations, hypertension
-Angina, dysrhythmias
Before calling a physician you need to be sure to?
Get vital signs that way you can give the doctor the latest set of vital signs
Diabetes Mellitus
-Chronic disease of deficient glucose metabolism
-Insufficient insulin secretion from beta cells
-Impaired insulin use
-Two types; type 1, and type 2
What type of insulin can be given by IV?
Regular insulin
What drug is given for hypothyroidism if you are wanting a fast response?
Liothyronine
S/E of hypothyroid medications
