Fire Building Construction
fully solved & updated
(latest version , graded A+)
Wood - answer Most common building material used in North America and is
the main component of a variety of structural assemblies. Size and moisture
content affect the reaction to fire conditions. Smaller dimensional pieces
needs to be protected by gypsum to increase heat resistance.

Green Wood - answer Wood with high moisture content. (Does not ignite nor
burn as fast as wood that has been kiln or dehydrated by exposure to air
over a long period of time).

Pressure treating - answer Fire-retardant chemicals to reduce the speed wood
ignited or burns. Weakens the wood's loaf-carrying ability by as much as
25%.

Newer construction - answer Often contains building construction that are
made of wood, fibers, plastics, plywood, particleboard, fiberboard, oriented
strand board (OSB), and paneling joined by glue or resin.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB) - answer Wooden structural panel formed by
gluing and compressing wood strands together under pressure. This replaced
plywood and planking in Majority of building construction. Roof decks, walls
and sunflowers are all commonly made of this material.

Masonry - answer Bricks, blocks, stones and unreinforced and reinforced
concrete products. Minimally affected by fire.

Veneer walls - answer Decorative covers for wood, metal and concrete-block
load-bearing walls.

, Spalling - answer Expansion of moisture within masonry materials due to
expose of heat resulting in tensile forces within the material, and causing it
to break apart.

Metal - answer Commonly include cast iron and steel aluminum. Provide
structural support, decorative covering and window frames, ductwork, pipes
and fasteners including nails, screws, and plates.

Cast iron - answer Stands up well to fire but may crack or shatter when
rapidly cooled with water. Also bolts or other connections can fail causing
components of building to fall.

Facades - answer Large exterior wall sections fastened to the masonry on the
front of the building.

Wrought iron - answer Used in early 1800s. used for decorations of gates,
fences and balcony railings. Usually riveted or welded together.

Steel - answer Primary material use for large structural support. . Lengthens
when heated. Fails at near or above 1,000°F. Fails depends on size, load it's
under, composition of steel and geometry of the member.

Lightweight steel truss - answer Structural support made from a long steel
bar that is bent at a 90-degree angle with flat or angular pieces welded to
the top and bottom. Will fail quicker than a large heavy I-beam. Reduce
effect of heat with sprayed-on concrete or or sprayed-on insulation.

Elongating steel - answer Exposed material that can push out load-bearing
walls and cause a collapse. If walls are able to withstand lengthening, it will
fail and sag in middle causing collapse of upper floors or the roof. Water can
stop lengthening and reduce the risks of a structural collapse.

Aluminum - answer Use increased throughout 20th century; used in roofing,
flashing, gutters, downspouts, window and door frames and exterior curtain
