Kant’s view on morality is that an action is not to judge based on the consequences of the action

but the intention or nature of the maxim. If there is good intention or goodwill that is all that

matters (Immanuel Kant, 527). Also, the maxim is correct only if it can serve as a universal law

through the categorical imperative test. For this test first we must figure out our motive for acting

in such a way, in this case it would be okay to have an abortion. Now we universalize this means

we must understand what would happen if everyone in the world had abortions, would that

work? Now a Kantian would argue that if everyone started having abortions then there would be

no kids left and the population would decline significantly. And if everyone has abortions then

there is no point in getting pregnant and starting a family. Thus, according to the test the maxim

has failed and is morally wrong. Another question would be what if I were sexually assaulted

and wanted an abortion. Kantian theory would be that there are no exceptions and if it has failed

the categorically imperative test then it is not to be done. The maxim cannot be universalized. If

we apply this to the categorical imperative test #2, we will still get the same answer because test

#2 states all people are valuable and to never use anyone for your own purposes. In this case that

“child” in you would be deemed valuable thus you may not want to harm it. Not only that but by

getting it aborded you as using your “child” as a means for yourself thus you may not do so.

The utilitarian or Mill’s view on morality is the opposite of a Kantian. Utilitarians believe that

the consequences of one's action should be taken into consideration. What that means is that it is

not all about your intention, you also must consider what will happen after. They also put an

emphasis on doing what makes you happy but also remember that your happiness should not

cause anyone else harm. On the topic of abortion, if getting an abortion will make you happy and

not harm anyone else, it is fine to do so. Since it will be your choice and your body. Mill would
