Report #1: Sound

Introduction

This lab assesses the basics of sound, sound waves, mathematics, and data-determining
through the use of various tools

Procedure

Experiment 1: The Tuning Fork

The tuning fork is the object that will create the sound in this experiment. Through the use
of LoggerPro, the frequency of the item will be determined.

The tuning fork must be excited by tapping it onto a soft surface. Once this is done, quickly
place it close to the microphone and record the data through the database. With the sound
waves collected, the experimental results can be determined through a scatterplot
template. The period and frequency of the tuning fork should then be found based on this
data.

Experiment 2: Your Voice

This experiment will then be conducted again, but this time with one’s voice. Collect data
(and scatter plot) from a pure tone made by said voice and find the frequency based on
that.

Experiment 3: Measure the Speed of Sound

A cardboard tube that is covered in one end will be used to make an echo to measure the
speed of sound. Place the microphone right at the opening of the tube, and set the data
collection settings to trigger once a sound is made. The sound made in this case was a

snap. To assure accurate data collection, two sounds should be measured: the initial snap,
and its echo. The time assessed will be the interval between the original sound and the
echo, and the speed will be determined based on that.

Once this data is collected, it is ready for analysis.
