Lab 3 Assignment: Enthalpy Change of a Chemical Reaction
Be sure to record all data and calculated results with the correct number of significant
figures.
In this part of the lab, you perform three trials of a calorimetry experiment to determine the heat
change that accompanies a chemical reaction. The heat change of the chemical reaction is related to
the heat changes of the surrounding solution and calorimeter by the law of conservation of energy:
qreaction + qsolution + qcalorimeter = 0
1. Write the balanced equation for the reaction between magnesium metal and hydrochloric acid. Include
physical states.
Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)
2. Record the following for each of the three trials. Be sure to record all data and calculated results with
the correct number of significant figures.
Remember to record measured values as indicated in procedure or read from measurement
instrument. Follow the significant figure rules (Activity 1) for calculated values.
Trial 1
a Mass of magnesium (g) 0.150
b Mass of the empty calorimeter (g) 18.600
c Mass of the HCl solution added to the calorimeter (g) 50.981
e Initial temperature of the HCl solution in calorimeter (°C) 21.5
f Final maximum temperature in the calorimeter after the reaction (°C) 34.2
g Calculate change in temperature, T (Tfinal – Tinitial), (°C) 12.7
Trial 2
a Mass of magnesium (g) 0.250
b Mass of the empty calorimeter (g) 18.600
c Mass of the HCl solution added to the calorimeter (g) 50.981
e Initial temperature of the HCl solution in calorimeter (°C) 21.5
f Final maximum temperature in the calorimeter after the reaction (°C) 42.6
g Calculate change in temperature, T (Tfinal – Tinitial), (°C) 21.1
Trial 3
a Mass of magnesium (g) 0.350
b Mass of the empty calorimeter (g) 18.600
c Mass of the HCl solution added to the calorimeter (g) 50.981
e Initial temperature of the HCl solution in calorimeter (°C) 21.5
f Final maximum temperature in the calorimeter after the reaction (°C) 51.0
g Calculate change in temperature, T (Tfinal – Tinitial), (°C) 29.5
