Pain is what? Pain is what the patient considers as pain. HOWEVER, if they are nonverbal,
evaluate by using vitals, s/s, or visual respirations.

Does acute pain occur frequently and last longer than 6 months? NO! Chronic pain lasts longer
than 6 months

The following are true about pain: everyone deserves to have their pain managed AND acute
pain resolves with tissue healing. Tolerance is not the same for everybody. Complete pain relief
is not always fixable

Large diameter A nerve fibers are sharp, localized, fast, and respond fast to pain! A show up first
(40 mph) and they are fast to respond. C fibers are smaller and slower (5mph)

Which of the following interventions will stimulate the large A fibers? A TENS unit, a massage,
and a heating pad. Relaxation does nothing for nerve fibers. Anything that is touching the skin
will. C fibers wont even be present for a massage.

When having a heart attack, the client may report jaw pain instead of chest pain. What type of
pain is this? Referred pain.

What are physiological reactions to low or moderate pain? Diaphoresis, tachypnea, and
increased blood glucose. BP also goes up!

Pallor and hypotension are physiological reactions to severe or deep pain? TRUE. Hypotension is
severe or deep pain (heart attack or kidney stone) goes long enough in pain, pt will go into
shock

The most appropriate pain scale to use to evaluate pain for an 8-year-old patient is what? The
Wong-baker faces scale. Flax scale is for nonverbal patients

Which of the following are NSAIDS? (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories). Aspirin and ibuprofen.
MAX dose for aspirin is 4000 ibuprofen is 3200 hydrocodone has no max dose (opioids)
