Title: ST01 Introduction to Medical Microbiology
Objective: Show equipment used for the cultivation of samples (growth conditions),
identi昀椀cation of samples (biochemical assays), and evaluation of samples (microscopy). Explain
what PPE is and rules concerning them.
Procedure: Watch lab lecture videos, take notes, and take the exam afterwards.
Notes:
Basic equipment
- Cleaning:
autoclave 125C
use heat, pressure and steam to sterilize
not just dry air. Dry air would take several hours, but steam is a lot more e昀케cient. Need to be careful
when opening it, so it needs to be depressurized.
- Growing:
昀椀xed incubator 37C,
,Petri dishes hold samples, tubes hold liquid cultures. Doors are air tight and sealed, to keep dark
conditions
,Shaker Incubator 37C
for when you want to take a growth media (liquid nutrient broth to enoculate bacteria.
Shaker rotates the culture in a swirling fashion for optimal growth
- Visualizing: microscopy
to visualize bacteria
- Storing: Refrigerator 4C
4 degrees slows bacterial growth and preserves samples.
, General Lab Safety:
Latex or nitrile gloves.
thermal cold and thermal hot gloves
Great white lab coat
Never leave a lab with PPE.
