Scene 9
→ I don’t want realism, I want to live in magic – doesn’t want to face her reality – cuts out
everything she doesn’t want to hear
→ blanche wants realism – mitch wants reality
→ “ought” in italics – emphasises she lives in her reality word
→ although she shares the truth with mitch – the fact that she always tells lies, she tells
the truth that she always lies “I misrepresent things to them”
→ turn of dialogues + turning on and off the lights – opposite and clash with eachother –
shows the friction between the two
→ the magic she creates for herself – “I try to give that to others as well” – shows its not
just a façade in her head but one she wants to portray to keep up appearances – however
that magic is just an illusion in her head
→ mitch keeps saying no – increases friction in these staccato sentences
→ “my loving brother in-law” – demonising her enemy – making him the villain, portraying
herself as a victim – sarcasm
→ fantastic repetition – sarcasm
→ rule of thirds – 3 witnesses – used by mitch - to convince and persuade blanche why he
believed stanley
→ flamingo? – rhetorical question – spinning her web of lies
→ tarantula arms – arms suggest it was a trap like a spiders web
→ yes that’s where I brought my victims – currently thinks/pretends she is the predator –
brought those conquests into her web of lies, a spider web – showing her agency
→ !!! – frustrated about mitch’s untrusting nature and questions – offensive
→ after allan sleeping with strangers – alan’s death + being gay put out the light within her
– these conquests relit that light by making her feel desired
→I bring my victims in , fill my empty heart - contrast/ juxtaposition – clearly visible she is
not a predator
→i think it was panic just panic – emphasis of the word panic, foreshadowing to her soon
descent in her panic and manic
→ true? – hypophora/rhetorical question – giving her own answer as well
Played out – vocab of games/cards – 1950’s – middle of 20 th century – implicit game of life
being played with her – played by her circumstances
→ Tail of kite - Men dominate blanche’s life – tin represents her past which cannot be
escaped from
