D514 - Lecture 6: Tooth Eruption and Exfoliation
| Questions with Complete Solutions
tooth eruption

-movement of a tooth from its site of development within the alveolar process to its
functional position in the oral cavity

-first clinically detectable stage of tooth development

-begins only after crown formation is complete

active eruption

-movement from the developmental position inside the alveolar process to functional
occlusion
-includes minor eruptive movement to maintain occlusal contact

passive eruption

-(receding) movement of the gingiva, exposing more of the tooth or clinical crown
-tooth not actually moving but rather gingiva is receding making more of the tooth
visible in the oral cavity

3 stage of tooth eruption

1. pre-eruptive phase
2. eruptive phase
3. post-eruptive phase

Pre-eruptive phase

-1st phase of tooth eruption

-movements of developing teeth within the alveolar process before they begin to erupt

, -total bodily movement of the tooth germ (move lingual to buccal)

-eccentric growth

-A-B in image

eccentric growth

-growth in which one part of the tooth germ remains fixed while the rest continues to
grow, leading to a change in the center of the tooth germ (i.e. root elongation)

-occurs during pre-eruptive phase

-image: A-C shows bodily movements while D-E shows eccentric growth

eruptive phase

-2nd phase of tooth eruption

-begins with tooth located in the bony compartment, ends with occlusal contact

-from developmental position to its final functional position once crown formation is
complete

-intraosseous and supraosseous events

-C-E in image

4 major events within the eruptive phase

root formation (bc only 1/2 was completed)
movement (up/down)
penetration (break through the epithelium)
occlusal contact

root formation within the eruptive phase
