Unit 2d: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

As a part of Unit 2, for each experiment we had to complete we did it as individual groups. This was
great because it helped us to work on our communication and cooperation skills, as well as to play
different roles in a group and contribute in different manners.
As general safety rules, in each experiment we had to take various safety precautions such as:
General Safety Precautions:
Safety Goggles
Lab Coat
Gloves
Hair tied back
Everything apart from the having to have your hair tied back was required for every student to
prevent any health and safety hazards. At one point during the titration experiment, the
hydrochloric acid had burned my thumb, either due to a hole in the glove, or it melting through the
glove. I proceeded to wash my thumb, hand and arm with cold water multiple times to make sure
there was no more hydrochloric acid anywhere near my skin.
Every assignment we had to complete after our practicals had to be completed individually, which
gave us ownership and a sense of pride over our work and the experiments even though we
completed the practicals as a group. Completing these practicals with others and working as a group
was really helpful to get feedback and error correction as well as keeping each other in check to
make sure the work gets done and everyone plays their part.
For Unit 2a we had to complete a Titration practical and a Colorimetry practical, not only did I learn
For Unit 2b we had to complete a Stearic Acid & Paraffin Wax practical and analyse their cooling
curves. This unit taught me how to find and calculate cooling curves.
For Unit 2a we had to learn and complete two different chromatography techniques, Paper
Chromatography of felt tip pens and Thin Layer Chromatography
By completing unit 2 I have gained quite a few more skills such as:
Being able to calibrate equipment such as digital and liquid thermometers, scales and ph
meters.
