This does not immediately kill him, it helps keeping him alive by not cutting off oxygen to his brain. He could drive a stage coach, he could talk after the tamping iron went through his head. How was Phineas unlucky? - ANSWER-Phineas was unlucky because his brain is on the outside of his skull, he had infections because the brain was not covered. Dangerous bacteria got in his brain which made it pus which built upon his forehead. He could only see out of one eye. He got really sick at times and had many seizures. He started to act like a child and people said that he was a child in a man's body.
