Elective Surgery - A surgical procedure that may be scheduled in advance, is not an emergency, and is
discretionary on the part of the physician and patient
Elective Inpatient Surgery(Same day admission) - requiring one or more overnight stays and pt is
admitted the day of the surgery
Elective Ambulatory Surgery - no need to be admitted or overnight stay, same day surgery.
preoperative phase - begins when the decision to have surgery is made and ends when the client is
transferred to the operating table
