Electric charge - a form of charge, either positive or negative, that exerts an electric
force
Electric force - the force exerted by an object with an electric charge; can be a force of
attraction or a force of repulsion
Objects that have like charges - repel
objects that have opposite charge - attract
Neutral object - An object that has equal numbers of protons and electrons
Positively charged object - An object that has fewer electrons than protons
negatively charged object - An object that has more electrons than protons
Electrons - Only negative electrons can move, positives cannot move from place to
place.
Static electricity - an imbalance of electric charge on the surface of an object
attraction of neutral objects - charged objects will attract neutral objects
induced charge seperation (positive) - A shift in the position of electrons in a neutral
object that occurs when a charged object is brought near it.
- The electrons and protons separate because the electrons are attracted to the
positively charged rod.
induced charge seperation (negative) - The electrons and protons separate because the
electrons are repelled from the negatively charged rod.
Electric discharge - The rapid transfer of electric charge from one object to another
(electrons always move from the object with more electrons to the object with less
negative charge)
lightning - a very dramatic electric discharge
Pith ball electroscope - pith ball that hangs by a thread and is attracted to charged
objects
Metal leaf electroscope - A device that can detect the presence of an electric charge
what are the three subatomic particles and which is the cause of static electricity? -
protons, neutrons, electrons and electrons cause static electricity(able to move)
what happens when a rubber balloon is rubbed against hair - rubber balloon becomes
(-) charged from the hair and the (-) charge of the balloon is attracted to the (+) of the
wall
Charging by friction - The transfer of electrons between two neutral objects (made from
different materials) that occurs when they are rubbed together or come in contact
(touch)
charging by conduction - charging an object by contact with a charged object and
transfering electrons until they have the same charge
Grounding - connecting an object to a large body, like Earth, that is capable of
effectively removing an electric charge that the object might have
