1. Economic Niche Definition: In terms of Asian Americans, it is a concentra-
tion of markets owned or work fields dominated by specific
ethnic groups.

Significance: This term explains why it is common to see
Filipinos in medical/healthcare professions, Chinese oper-
ating restaurants, Vietnamese operating nail salons, and
Asian Indians operating as motel/hotel owners or in the
high-tech industry.

2. Economic Na- Definition: The belief in only buying American-made prod-
tionalism ucts and avoiding foreign-made ones.

Significance: Ironic as many commodities Americans ex-
ploit are 'made in China' or made by immigrants in US
sweatshops.

3. Outsourcing and Definition: Obtaining resources from outside the US.
Offshoring
Significance: Explains why call center representatives are
mainly from India and the Philippines, as colonization has
led them to speaking English.

4. Immigrant In- Definition: Immigrants are given jobs in US because they
sourcing are specifically educated with American-standard knowl-
edge.

5. International Labor was originally segregated by race. Example: many
Racial & Gender telephone operators were Japanese women.

6. "Runway" Sweat- Definition: Labor laws did not apply to fashion or clothing
shops companies, so their workers (mainly female) were paid
much less than minimum wage.

Significance: To find even cheaper labor, companies would
move sweatshops to outside the US, where working con-
ditions are significantly worse (no labor laws whatsoever).
