ASSIGNMENT 1 (SEMESTER 2)
DUE DATE: 15 August 2024
QUESTION 1
1. Discuss and diagrammatically illustrate the fundamental balance principle. [10]
ANSWER:
Fundamental Balance Principle
The fundamental balance principle in environmental economics is centred on the concept of
balance between environmental degradation and environmental protection. It asserts that
there should be a balance between the benefits derived from economic activities that may cause
environmental harm and the costs of mitigating such harm.
DIAGRAMMATIC ILLUSTRATION:
The diagram on the left represents the
fundamental balance principle in the context
of forces (mechanical equilibrium):
Diagram of Forces in Equilibrium:
o Consider a simple system where forces act
on a point.
o The forces are represented by vectors. For
equilibrium, the vector sum of all forces
should be zero.
The blue vectors represent individual forces
(F1, F2, F3), and the red vector represents the
resultant force, which is zero, indicating that
the system is in equilibrium.
