QUESTION 1 1.1 What is the difference between assimilation and
accommodation? (4)
Assimilation and accommodation are two fundamental concepts in Jean Piaget's theory of
cognitive development. Both processes are ways in which individuals adapt to new information,
but they operate differently:
1. Assimilation:
o Definition: Assimilation is the process of taking in new information and
integrating it into existing cognitive schemas (mental frameworks).
o Example: A child who knows the schema for "dog" (four-legged, furry animal)
might see a cat and initially call it a dog because it fits the existing schema.
2. Accommodation:
o Definition: Accommodation occurs when new information cannot be fitted into
existing schemas and therefore requires modifying the current schema or creating
a new one.
o Example: After the child learns that a cat is not a dog and has different
characteristics (meows, climbs trees), they will adjust their schema to differentiate
between dogs and cats.
Key Differences:
