CASE STUDY: JOHN, THE DANCER John was born in Nigeria with a cleft palate, which is a facial and oral malformation. He had a split in his upper lip and in the roof of his mouth, which is called the palate (see illustration). Both his parents died in a motor vehicle accident while John was still in the Special Care Baby Unit. South African parents adopted him at the age of six months. Multiple specialists in South Africa worked together to improve the quality of John’s life, for example, an oral-maxillofacial (or mouth, jaw and face) surgeon, a plastic surgeon, a nutritionist, an orthodontist (a specialist dentist) and a speech therapist. Several surgeries were performed to make his lip appear as normal as possible. The medicinal properties of the plant, Devil’s claw, helped to relieve his pain. Additional surgeries involving the palate were performed to improve his speech. However, his speech remained affected; he sounded like a person with a heavy cold. John was often absent from school because of all the medical interventions. His mother was always by his side – the company she worked for was most supportive. His parents also arranged extra classes for John when he fell behind with his schoolwork. Although John and his parents received muchneeded support from their local church, children from the neighbourhood and school teased John. His self-esteem was low. To promote inclusive education, the Grade R teacher explained diversity to the class at a level they could understand. She also referred John and his parents to an educational psychologist, who informed his parents that physical attractiveness plays a significant role in social set-ups. According to the psychologist, cultural differences also made John feel different. In the background questionnaire, John’s mother had mentioned that he was always dancing when he heard music. During the functional investigation, the psychologist noticed his exceptional rhythm. She recommended that John take up dance classes to develop his talent and build his self-esteem. John excelled at dancing; he was exceptionally talented and practised for hours on end. However, in Grade 7 he was teased because he did ballet. His parents took him back to the psychologist who recommended that he further his dancing at a School for the Arts. During his high school years at the School for the Arts, John also became a valued member of a youth dance group at his church and many of his peers admired him. After John had won an international dance competition at the age of 18, a local newspaper interviewed him. “Dance saved my life,” John said. “I had many operations to repair my face, but I always felt beautiful when I dance.” When asked what item he always had with him, John replied: “I always have Buchu gel with me – the Buchu plant from the Western Cape is world-renowned for its natural anti-inflammatory properties.
